Would you like to read Primary Perception in French? Michele Choquet and Franci Prowse are working out a system where people who read French will have access to the translation. For a minimal donation, perhaps 20., we can transmit the translation. Please get in touch if you are interested! It could be that Franck, in the south of France is enjoying Chapter 1 right now!

February 27, 2009 was Cleve Backster’s 85th birthday. Present with him were his staff, his publisher and friends at the Panda Inn in downtown San Diego. Greetings may be sent via the website: Franci@primaryperception.com

Among the gifts was a DVD, transferred from a video filmed by Mellen-Thomas Benedict, showing the entire Primary Perception lecture as given on May 28, 2004 at the Foundation for Mind/Being Research. You may find it available on this site.

Mr. Backster signed a document, dated November 20,2008, making Franci Prowse, (this writer) an official member of the Board of Directors of the Backster Research Foundation.  Due to a lack of outside support in terms of funding, Franci is now on a tour, presenting Primary Perception to any size groups, in hopes of finding many small donors, and a few large ones. Please feel free to write suggestions, as to where she can go to broaden the horizons of key people and generate donations to Backster Research, which is, since 1969 a 501c non-profit corporation. She has both the book, Primary Perception, and a DVD of Cleve giving his lecture, now for sale. Any media may contact her at Franci@primaryperception.com

It’s a thorny question.  What is involved in preserving plants’ rights to reproduce? They have ratified an amendment to protect "the dignity of plants."  Geneticists are hampered by the new law.

Cleve receives kudos from scientists!

At last, brought by Mark Abadi, a DVD containing raves of appreciation from scientists, albeit mostly quantum physicists, was received this July, 2008, by Cleve Backster. They were all attendees of the ISSEEEM conference that month. Thanks to Mark, of www.Markabadi.com for his labor of love.  It lifted away the shadows of isolation from Cleve and the lab, and brought a cheerful evening of sushi at Kiyo’s in downtown San Diego.

Appearances of Cleve Backster:

November 1, 2008 –

Cleve Backster was seen having a sushi dinner at Kiyo’s with Franci Prowse and friend, Bill.  It was Bill’s birthday, and Kiyo himself delivered the handmade rolls and some free green tea ice cream.  Kiyo has read the book in Japanese, and agrees with the philosophy of Primary Perception. Makes his food taste pretty darn good!

Cleve Backster returned recently from New Orleans where he attended the American Polygraph Association’s convention. Once again, honored with a prestigious award he also presented an associate with the Cleve Backster award, now an annual event. There was an issue about government approved polygraph techniques that had Cleve standing up once again for his scientific method of chart evaluations. He does not compromise the truth, or allow polygraph to become a tool for manipulation. We all owe a lot to him for that.

Earlier last year, while filming a pilot for an upcoming movie, Cleve Backster managed to duplicate his first observation on camera. This time he used a philodendron, and the students acting in the classroom scene actually intended to burn it.

Although the movie is still being made, this footage may not be in it. We are hoping to get the clip for Cleve’s own movie.

The Asian Connections:

Primary Perception is out in Japanese. Nippon Kyobun-sha is the publisher. The e-mails from Japanese readers reflect a philosophical harmony with Backster Research Foundation’s findings.

Franci Prowse, publisher of Primary Perception, went to Taiwan in June, 2005 to present Cleve Backster’s research at a conference in Taipei. The Chinese edition of Primary Perception, published by Broad Press, is available in Chinese and includes a DVD. (http://www.broadpressinc.com/)

Cleve Backster spoke at the lecture hall in Palo Alto, a combined teaching night of the Foundation for Mind-Being Research and the Institute for Transpersonal Psychology. He went through all of his Power Point pictures and shared his stories, followed by a prolonged question and answer period. Many scientists, Russell Targ among them, and researchers were in attendance so the questions were pertinent and brought out many good things. For a short excerpt you may request Bio Web letter #11.

February 25, 2004 –

Cleve made a rare appearance at Cypress College February 24. The audience was composed of students, faculty and members of the public.
A leaf borrowed from a local plant demonstrated high activity on the Bio Response meter, especially when the conversation turned toward paranormal subjects.
Was it the increased psychic energy or Cleve’s concern for his reputation as a scientist? Several students came as a "critical thinking" assignment but left smiling.

Skepdic vs. skeptic

On the subject of "critical thinking" some people have written about the "Skepdic.com" article on the "Backster Effect." We have composed a "Fact Sheet" to clear up the many untruths in that rather out-of-date article. If you are interested in having a copy sent, please ask. The page for the Skeptical Dictionary on Amazon.com is certainly a mixed message. It is good to see that some people still value the truth, and don’t enjoy seeing it twisted.

Primary Perception

It started with plants, then went on to anything that could be electroded such as fruit, yogurt, meat, bacteria, then human cells.

"It was early in the morning and no other person was in the laboratory. My thought and intent was: ‘I?m going to burn that leaf!’

The very moment the imagery of burning that leaf entered my mind, the polygraph recording pen moved rapidly to the top of the chart! I then thought, "Gee, it’s as though this plant read my mind!"
